Do you remember as a child how we were taught to survive a fire? I remember a big fireman dressed in full attire coming to talk to our third grade class. He said “remember kids, if you are ever caught in a fire you need to get down low and crawl to safety. Do not try to walk out or the fumes from the fire may overtake you.” That has always stayed in my mind as one of those “moments to remember” for some reason.
Almost 6 years ago I went through a “fire” of sorts. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. God spoke to my heart and told me he was going to heal me and not be afraid. He also said he was going to use the hand of a surgeon, medication and radiation to perform this healing. I know as sure as I am sitting here that the God I serve could have just spoken a word over my situation and the cancer could have been gone! But I also knew His ways were the best way regardless of what I would have preferred so I purposed in my heart to trust Him.
The surgery was a piece of cake. The recovery period leading up to the radiation and the period following was quite another story. I do not think I was ever so sick or so weak as I was in that 6 month period. Many days it was all I could do to crawl out of bed, shower quickly and crawl back to bed totally exhausted at that minor effort. I could not sleep, eat, or think clearly. I was barely functioning.
One day when I was at my absolute worst I was crying out to God to take all the sickness away. He gently but firmly told me that I was in the refiner’s fire. God said I did not need to fear the fire because it was not for my demise but to refine me and that I would come out stronger in the end. He took me to the book of Daniel in the Bible and literally parked me in the third chapter. Day after day I read and re read the the story of the three Hebrew children and their fiery trial. He reminded me that he was right there with me in the midst of the fire and all would be well in time. To this day I have the final doctor’s report clearing me of cancer tucked within the pages of Daniel 3 to serve as a reminder to me that no matter how hot things can get at times, no fire is greater than my Savior!
So praise God here I am healed and stronger just as He promised me with a testimony of love, grace and mercy to share. Now my friends I ask—are you in a fire today? Are you just coming out of one? Do you smell smoke and wonder if you are about to go into one? FEAR NOT. Hit the floor if you have to and start crawling. I promise you that your Savior is right there crawling next to you and he will get you out in his time! He is faithful and the fire has a purpose. Trust him and keep going. Your redemption is closer than you think!
…when you walk through the fire you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior…Isaiah 43:2-
From my heart to yours,
